1964 Charles Heidsieck ‘Millésime Vinothèque’ | Reims | Champagne | Frankrike | Swedish importer: Provinum | price aprox €500 | 75PN 25CH | RJ 94(94)
THE VINATGE 1964 ***** This wonderful vintage is often compared with 1966. The 1964s have today, with few excep- tions, a scent of mint chocolate, bergamot oil, freshly baked bread, and a rich toffee as well as a concentrated taste at the peak of their life cycle. If you want to try old champagne, but are not willing to take a risk, the 1964 might be the safest bet. The flower-filled prestige champagne Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque made its debut with this vintage that is still the house’s best. Dom Pérignon is another choice this year next to Louis Roederer Cristal, and Heidsieck & Co Monopole Diamant Bleu.
TASTING NOTE ‘A typical Charles! Golden color with fresh virile mousse. For those who do not know how dry the cocoa smell, I can recommend a sniff of this champagne. Toasty house-notes and chalky Champagne cellar-tone are the two foundation stones here. Nose and taste of sweet, apricot marmalade with brioche. The medium-bodied dry taste is initially a bit reclusive, but with time in the glass, a lovely length and aroma of cocoa, tangerine and orange. Lavishly opulent and rich with a bold and buttery base. Fresh and rich at the same time. The fruit is pure and the finish has a nice, sweet tail.’
’Will You ever re-launch Champagne Charlie? Maybe we’re working on it!’
