Charles Heidsieck Rosé Réserve 0 201510 44 28 28 85 90
(2010 base). 7-8 years on its lees, 20 Vin de Réserve. Grapes sources from Ambonnay, Bouzy, Aÿ, Verzenay, Les Ricey. A bandwagon that I can understand people in Champagne jumping on to is the pro-duction of vast quantities of non-vintage rosé since the demand is so great. Purely from the viewpoint of the connoisseur, there is good reason for feeling despondent. Vintage rosé is clearly so much more fun! Bollinger, Deutz, Henriot, Clicquot, Moët, in fact almost all the great houses have started making a champagne in this category. RJ personally would not buy a single one of them since there are always other champagnes available to be preferred. The question is however whether Charles Heidsieck has nevertheless not had the best success, at least with consideration to pure enjoyment without any extra storing. They have, it is true, lost their lovely coffee-roasted style since the fruitiness has been packed with so much oily blood orange and strawberry sponge cake. Yummy, smooth and eminently, charmingly roséish.

Charles Heidsieck Brut Réserve 0 201512 40 35 25 90 94
(2008 base). From a hundred or so villages and 40% reserve wines Cyril Brun makes one of the very best non-vintage champagnes produced by a large house. Somewhat modest in its expression, a little reclined.
Good nuttiness, however, with roasted Chardonnay notes beautiful play by the whole experience. Fine caramel saturated weight vibrates in the core that testify to a nice complexity and potential in the future. With a couple of years extra storage in the bottle it develops a high-class nose of toasted bread and a long complex fruitiness with a smooth aftertaste of toffel. Nowadays house Champagne in SAS Business Class.

Yet another really lovely wine from Charles Heidsieck. I believe that many will perceive it as a little less roasted and classical than usual, but for me it’s all there already if slightly soaked in thick vintage typical honey-scented fruit.

This was without a doubt the wine that I did not want to spit out and that I returned to time and again. Enormously voluptuous and classical. Gorgeously nutty, with creamy Chardonnay character and sunnily replete with orange. Yet another fantastic Heidsieck.

Much lighter than normal, but as soon as I put my nose in the glass I felt at home. This is a very good Champagne, typical of the house, with tones of coffee and orange chocolate. Rather quick to develop and somewhat more characterized by Chardonnay than usual: something that we should get used to, because Daniel Thibault had a clear preference for the delicious green grape variety.  A an ange of 25 years this wine has an extraordinära struktur! I’m in love! Gout de Crayères!!! Terroir typicity from the chalk cellars!

Charles Heidsieck Rosé 2006 201512 63 0 37 91 93
15 handpicked Crus from Champagne – Chardonnay from Oger, Mesnil-sur-Oger, Cremant, Vertus and Aveny. The Pinot Noir comes from Tauxières, Ambonnay and Aÿ. Coffee roasted with a currently quite rich fruitiness that after all appeal to me much. Wonderfully, juicily compact and massive with sweetness and nutty, slightly sticky and toasted, indeed almost burnt aromas. Syrupy and gorgeous.

Charles Heidsieck Rosé 1985 201512 70 0 30 94 94
Huge ripe rosé with a loose bready style. A generous, soft, round, and pleasurable flavor that gives a far sweeter impression than the ’83. At the moment, a fine coffee note. Brilliant sous-bois and hints of truffles slowly warmed up the piece of meat in a beef fillet Wellington. Low-key in his whole expression, high integrity factor.

‘Finally a great matyre Rosé Champagne’ scouted Johan Tidelius when he gave the glass a wiff!  A weak whisper of fizz… Beautiful orange-red colour. Dries hazelnuts, varm leathery notes. A great Burgundians expression! Think polished Morey St Denis aromas & tannin structure! A bottle in perfect condition!

Heidsieck’s cuvée de prestige is a constant winner at blind tastings all over the world. Already a legend! So silky-smooth and with such intensive nut toffee! The toastiness is there, but lying swimming in an oily nectar which prevents it from really making its way forward as it does in many other vintages. Pretty mousse and uplifting charm. These Oenothèque wines are truly delightful. What vigour and freshness along with the depth and the tones of maturity that are gradually revealed. Exquisitely delicious!

Blanc de Millénaires Oenothèque 1990 201512 0 0 100 94 95
The foremost vintage so far of this acclaimed préstige Champagne. Before the ’95 was released… The scent is clear as a bell with Grand Siècle’s beautiful note of sun-dried, newly laundered sheets, along with more than a dash of famous coffee-roasting house. Clean, focused, lemony-fresh, and sporty taste. A Ferrari of the wine world!

I must admit that I did not expect this from the beginning a bit over-polished ingratiating wine could reach such amazing heights. Absolutely incredibly tasty giving a languorous euphoria-creating need to flood oneself by drinking this wine in big gulps.

Reserve Charlie ‘mis en Cave 1990’ 1989 201512 34 33 33 90 92
An expensive prestige Champagne from Charles Heidsieck’s oenoteque. A super-sophisticated Daniel Thibault wine with tons of delicious toasted layers, vital fruit, and a smart, youthful, spicy attack. Delightful contrast between youthful snarling vigor and mellow butterscotchy maturity.  Most likely totally exceptional with additional storage.

Released in 2002. Fantastically, smokily toasted, grilled and nutty! The fruitiness is not the very best but the mousse trifles prettily with the tongue and the taste explosion of gunpowder smoke on the tongue is sensationell. I senced an initial note of mid-matu re Dom Pérignon

What delightful elegance! The wines from 81 just get better and better, with their lovely floral aroma backed up by the additional concentrated butteriness of maturity. They never become viscous and if, as in the case of this wonderful wine, they are stored in the perfect cellars of Champagne until quite recently then the balance between freshness and the syrupiness won through time is sensational.

Apart from the lack of length in the aftertaste that is typical of the house, this is a phenomenal wine. Profoundly, beautifully golden, vivacious, full-bodied, creamy, and yes, almost as sluggish as acacia honey, and yet delightfully elegant and refreshing with a purity and a seductive aroma that carries one’s thoughts to orange blossom and cowslips.
